Someone from you
The meeting of Western psychology and Buddhist World has recently given a documentary film, Someone beside you . It must be said immediately, it is a beautiful film. The picture is superb, the director takes the time to show landscapes in Europe or America, the mountains, the ocean, a sunset. The presence of nature provides the inspiration and gives the exact counterpoint to the madness that we speak the main characters in this documentary, all of which have experienced serious psychotic episodes. Because then the claustrophobia prevails, terror no longer belong to themselves, hallucinations, morbid, violent acts. What is shocking in this film, very moving in many ways, the floor is finally done with these "sick". Moreover, better than "mental illness" the term folly aside perhaps less of their experience which has nothing medical, but is a genuine existential quest. For madness is portrayed here as the individual and desperate attempt to find a better world.

director Edgar Hagen, inhabited by a very questioning about psychosis, interrogates the human spirit and how to lose as to find it. It pays tribute to the pioneering work of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Edward M. Podvoll (1936-2003), also known as llama Mingyur. It traces the birth of his great project to help psychotic patients, the project Windhorse, by querying for example the first patient, Karen, for making this alternative treatment has been possible. It testifies to his madness and his first meeting with Dr. Podvoll, we also found several times during the documentary, in Boulder, Colorado.

Word to psychosis
hear these firsthand accounts is necessary. Everyone can say of himself, for himself, what is his madness, give reasons - because there is reason in the madness - that led him to slide from normal to fall into these pathways crosses, sometimes without knowing how to return. Out of the delirium, the lucidity of psychiatric patients is striking. They may be due to the camera friend of Hagen, in all their humanity and their distress, their desire to live and share their experiences with a company that often they have abandoned, but that was abandoned. They relive their most decisive crisis, we do know from the inside, with great precision.

One of hallmarks of the movie is love, palpable among individuals who work together, psychotherapy, psychotic, the distinction is often blurred between the two, moreover, in a case community of thought. The challenge is for them all to understand how we avoid the madness if possible, and how it comes out once fell out of health, overwhelmed by his own mind. Understand it is to make humanity itself, find a life together, a passage between people who are generally so cut off from their own experience that they are inaccessible to the other and his word. Here comes love, or compassion, the desire to work together, as two minds can come together beyond the barriers of you and me, health and disease. Besides the major work of Edward Podvoll "Recovering Sanity" was published in French under the title Psychosis and Healing, but the subtitle is The path of compassion .

Naropa, and Trungpa Podvoll
should know that Boulder has been an incredible spiritual and cultural center from the 70s, as Trungpa Rinpoche established his residence and founded a large community, a place for seminars and retreats in the Rockies, but also the first Buddhist-inspired university recognized by the state, Naropa University. Become a student of Trungpa, who teaches him meditation and tantric techniques to work with his own mind, based Podvoll professor of contemplative psychotherapy from Naropa, he directed from 1978 to 1990. In 1981 he developed the Windhorse project (wind horse, lungta), a term derived from the cycle of teachings on the sacred way of the warrior dear to Trungpa, that everyone has a basic goodness in him, above all, bewilderment to madness. For Trungpa, the fundamental health is at work in the life of every human being, as he is human, born of this earth real. This vision decidedly human, far from blaming a drift of the disease Mental guiding Ed Podvoll in his revolutionary approach to the reception and treatment of psychosis.

The project team of the Wind Horse working on three simple principles.
1. "All human beings have a basic mental health. According to Chogyam Trungpa, certainly "mental confusion exists and operates, but are secondary to the underlying health."
2. "Since human beings are not separated from their environment, if you create a healthy environment during their treatment, then patients are more likely to heal." Trungpa again: "The central point is to evoke some kindness, some tenderness, kindness importantly, a sense of touch. When we set up an environment to treat people, this is a situation of global environment. A very disturbed patient or cut the world could not answer on the spot, it will probably long. But if a general sense of benevolence is communicated to him, then maybe a crack will appear in the concrete of neurosis: it will become manageable and we can therefore work with her. "
3. "The cure is to discover and synchronize with its own basic health."
Between health and madness

"Whoever has a mind can also lose. We all know that, otherwise we would not constantly do our best to keep right. If we had no such fear, we would realize that we live permanently on the frontiers of madness. "According to Eric Chapin, psychotherapist at Windhorse project. Oscillate between two poles is our common lot and shows that life is not fixed once and for all one side or the other of an imaginary line which will decide between madness and reason. This is bad news for those who think free, it is quite good for those who suddenly finds himself on the other side of the mirror without reaching identify. Change, transformation, healing is possible. The frontier is moving, and it is one of the effects of the same Buddhist compassion, but to reduce the gap between self and other by carrying out the first opening ( shunyata ).

The modern view of self is one of the stumbling blocks of Western psychology, because it is too influenced by metaphysics, that is to say a very active mind which influences us despite ourselves. Today is regarded as an ego and see her next another or to distinguish the world into subject and object, has become a truism it is very difficult to escape. This is one of the purposes of this section to show an alternative. One finds at work thinking of American psychoanalyst Bruno Bettelheim: "Much of modern psychology seeks to establish knowledge about the other, too much, in my opinion, that is not offset by a commitment at least as important to self-knowledge. But I think about each other - which is not the same as knowing something about the other - can only function of self-knowledge. " (The empty fortress ). This echoes the words of Podvoll when he warns: "When we cling to the difference between self and other, a huge gap widens. When one identifies as the therapist, it has already lost half of his humanity. We must get off that pedestal and be an ordinary human, what you are, with what you know and what you know. "Psychology is a human science, a practice borrowed from humanity, the treatment of insanity ever reminding us to the humility of the position of those who do not know - but is willing to listen.

Remove Stress through Meditation

Stop hunting thoughts
The tiger is watching . His muscles tense. His attention is tightening. He watches its prey. He chose a gazelle that seems more lower than the others, and focuses only on her, relegating the rest of the herd in the background. When the hunt begins, he would not run after this one animal, forgetting everything else. Once the goal is achieved, attention is relaxed satiated tiger and animals that come in range, not more to him than the landscape that surrounds it. We take this detour through a stage of animal life to speak today of a public health problem in Western societies: stress. Stress is a state of inner tension, which takes a form both physically and mentally and manifests itself in all kinds of discomfort, restlessness, chronic pain, generalized anxiety, sleep disorders, nutrition, and especially disorders of attention abilities. This clinical picture, well known to doctors and psychologists, but also the man in the world suffers directly because it is not inevitable. The modern world is going in this direction and we are bombarded with information, stimuli of all kinds, and we are forced to follow an increasing rate in the treatment of such information. Some may deplore it, but this statement of fact is the collective pleasure that can be felt to be so subjected to increasing pressure, summoned to respond to a voltage which is certainly painful but feel alive, "the catch" they say. We love our mind feel like a tiger hunting in the animal ... But sometimes wiser than man knows when to stop and once his short-term goal fulfilled, he goes to another attentional mode. That men do not know anymore. They run constantly after their thoughts, their concerns, their professional or social, between the mobile phone and internet, between television and entertainment, as time consuming as much stimulation. We came to the point of being disabled attention, prisoners of stress, which wreaked havoc, causing many diseases and reactive depression. But escape is possible: for the attention.

Attention is not the concentration
First, what attention? Meditation, first and foremost, we learn. This is to develop a full sense of presence, openness conscious. This is not the attention of stuck "beware! "Presence of mind but a greater and more precise at a time. Attention is the real secret of meditation where life changes, things open. This secret is known to Buddhists, but begins to resonate beyond the sphere of spirituality. Western medicine is beginning to feed on them. In France, the wave arrives, evidence for the Nouvel Observateur has its front cover on meditation as a new dosage form. The mindfulness approach developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn is an outstanding example, as the Open-Focus of The American psychologist Fehmi.
latter explores in her book Mindfulness (Belfond, 2010) discovered a simple but fruitful: the attention, especially as we pay attention is at the heart of our spirit and our way of being in the world. "The control of attention leads to change (...) on the entire nervous system, muscles, body, fortitude and spirit as a whole" We do not know yet fully the resources of mind, and we remain fixed on a narrow dimension of attention, comparable to the concentration, focus (focus) on a single goal at the expense of other dimensions more open and inclusive. Fehmi identifies the riches that are ours at this level and distinguishes four forms of attention: narrow, diffuse, and immersed objective.
For The Fehmi, many problems can be solved by simply changing fashion attention. This balance between the four types and find a fairer balance. The spirit does not have to be limited as well, obsessed by the performance of what is to be done now, but he knows plasticity and flexibility, allowing to enter the field of consciousness all the nuances of the experience a narrow set excluded for greater efficiency. The open sights recommended by the Open method is a mode-Focus attention that admits both under close (concentration) and referred diffuse (broader vision), inviting them to live for attention and a fuller life more unified. Warning

open
"Attention means" be alert "and not look" something ". This implies a process of intelligent and lively, not the mechanical action of observing what happens stupidly. "Trungpa Rinpoche wrote in The Heart of the subject . It does not reverse the perspective here, because it refers rather attentive to the tiger, opened before he commits his race frenetic and lacks all the options available to him. The mind is like rather then the traditional image of the pig who eats everything in its path behind and drove straight ahead without discrimination, without intelligence. This type of focus on "something" is undesirable because it causes us to lose the opening, the presence, or what Thich Nhat Hanh called mindfulness. It is crucial to see how attention works, and the work of Les Fehmi can help by separating its scientific accuracy and analysis attentional modes. After all, there is no attention to making an idol, something untouchable in a separate domain of life, away from everyday concerns. It's nothing special, nothing more natural in a sense, if only we had forgotten with such force. Meditation opens up these capabilities in every human being, but lost. This is not a spiritual exercise as such, but it is open a connection to the world that our education has made us forget.

Pay attention turns
However one should not confuse the fields. Meditation is a revolution in our whole being. This is not a technical tool development staff but a new report to the entirety of that is. The call of the freedom that open attention. Understood in this way, there is no contradiction between the approaches psychological or medical attention and the Buddha's path. The Buddhist teacher Fabrice Midal attests: "Something in you work through meditation, which is not in the realm of thought, the seizure is impossible. Meditation transforms you regardless of what you want. Your life changes, but we do not decide in what direction. Wisdom greatest work in you, by the very fact that you pay attention. "Pay attention turns to himself. Fehmi's going in this direction when he writes "Everyone has the ability to rebalance and heal the nervous system to end its problems, relieve pain, slow the pace of life while doing more things live more in depth , optimize their physical and mental function and radically improve their daily lives. How? The answer is simple, it is within the reach of all. It involves changing the way be careful. "

attention to the risk philosophy

This post is taken from the newsletter Fabrice Midal, which explains the meaning of work at the crossroads of meditation and philosophy, the theme of the weekend to come," Being open self, others and the world "18 and June 19, 2010 in Paris.

Nightlife framework
few weeks ago, I went to a retreat. This is an important time of year, where I am confronted very directly to loneliness and intensity of practice. Meditation is sometimes described as a gesture of hygiene of the mind. Of course, as it is good to brush your teeth or do some exercise, get in touch with his own mind through the practice of meditation allows you to find this thread of confidence and stability in the heart of the tumult of emotions, anxiety and difficulties we all face.

But the practice is even more profound, an adventure and a way to make his life an adventure. Too often we live our lives as if it were a highway. Everything is already decided. Because of fear, lack of courage and especially small compromises, small sacrifices, the lack of vision, we live a life that does not really look like. We sometimes even then the vague feeling that we live next to us. We can do projects that follow other projects - the deeper meaning of everything we do fails. The practice of meditation involves living his life as an adventure, a way of entering the unknown. We discover the faces of the self, the landscape of reality and states of being quite amazing.

Strangely, most people understand as the adventure involving taking hallucinogenic potions, eat plants in South America or in more common to travel in foreign countries. But these are, in most cases, that sophisticated forms of entertainment. Nothing great, not real opened. Intense experiences are strictly nothing in common with genuine spiritual experiences. The former are merely confirmations of our existence, ways to focus on yourself-and-yet-self. The second we are entering a very decisive in this opening where the self, others and the world will really show. An opening that moves our way of being and questions everything.

is striking. People who return from their journey into the world, you show the photos they have taken, and show nothing alive. We only see pictures that we know in advance that we've seen in all the books and magazines. They are not out of the box of their minds. They just moved the framework in other landscapes. They confuse the new landscape with the real discovery of an unknown. The real adventure is to touch the part of our habits, our fears, our belief, our conformism. Now touch the frame, awareness, less prisoner free themselves from our blinders, imposes a discipline and a real work.

Learn to meditate ...
Meditation in its rigor and beauty, is a valuable resource to regain the open space where you can enter in relation to oneself, others and the world - so really new. The heart of the project Prajna & Philia is, therefore, describe the practice of meditation, not as a religious form that lock us in certainties but as a direct and easy to "stir up life," to use expression of the poet Antonin Artaud. To quote the German poet Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1822): "Whether we like it or not we admit it, we need plants that have roots to break ground in order to flourish in the ether and bear fruit. " The Meditation is now the twenty-first century, the royal road to find an anchor that gives confidence fertile and allows us to grow.

To live and think differently
But meditation also leads us to think and live differently. It is not a retreat into an ivory tower, but a risk of sustained open and recognize the opening to the heart of the world. It finds its meaning as it makes us question the number of evidences, habits and behaviors. It liberates us. Even more decisively, it makes us question the implicit our frameworks of thought.

weekend of meditation that will take place on Friday 18 and Saturday, June 19, would try to approach meditation in this venture deep in it. And trying to think more before the opening, we have the great joy of being the philosopher-Lanord Hadrian France, which accompanies the existence of Prajna & Philia since its foundation.
In the previous weekend in Paris organized around And if the love we knew nothing? , I had the pleasure of receiving Michel Cazenave and Hellenist Jean-Paul Savignac, comparing the path to find the love which unfolds from the practice of meditation (in the heart of my own commitment) to two great traditions of the West. It was the opinion of all, a highlight. Play in ancient Greek poetry of Sappho into a meditation seminar, opened his heart to the point and gave meditation a greater extent.

The challenge of this weekend of June in Paris is in a sense more ambitious: to approach the responsibility of the meditation into our world to change our relationship to everything and make space for an adventure that addresses not only significant to the narrow framework of our own insularity but also those of our own time and our civilization. We did, in fact, at the age of globalization and devastation, hatred of the earth, no other possibilities. But as pointed out by Martin Heidegger: "It is difficult, I confess, to get rid of representations of a tradition of 2500 years." Yet such is the task we have ahead. I do not teach meditation to help perpetuate the ignorance that is destroying our world, but rather to liberate us.
